2020 Scholarship Winners Presented at Shaw Park

Tony Siemens, Baseball Manitoba's President, is presenting the Field of Dreams Scholarships and our 50th Anniversary Scholarships to all winners at Shaw Park tonight.

Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of Arlen Peters - Field of Dreams

Peters was an Honour Roll student every year except for his junior year of high school, where he achieved Honour Roll with distinction and graduated with an 85% average. He is dedicated to his community and has been for years. From helping with hockey practices in his community to working at Faith Mission, Peters has also volunteered at a Breakfast Club at his local arena, running practices and serving breakfast before school every Wednesday for three years. He helped coach his brother’s baseball practices throughout the past five years but has been more involved as of late. Last summer Peters was chosen to play for Team Manitoba at the Canada Cup in Regina, where the team placed sixth. Last September he was selected to play in Toronto at T12 as one of the top 150 high-school players in Canada. Peters finished his high-school MJBL Junior season in the top five for all offensive categories of qualified hitters with a .422/.560/.641 slash line while also leading the league in saves with a 6/6 conversion rate, 12.7 K/9, 0.118 opponents batting average, 0.55 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. While playing for 18U South Central AAA in qualifiers and provincials, he led his team by hitting .850. His performance at provincials garnered the attention of the Provincial Champion, Pembina Hills, who picked him up to represent Manitoba at the 18U AAA National Tournament in London, ON. This past winter he had the opportunity to move in with Amos Ramon and his family while training at the Home Run Sports Academy. While being a part of the Jr. Goldeyes Varsity Team he received multiple offers before committing to play at a top ten Division 1 Junior College, Johnson County Community College, in Kansas City, KS.

Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of Jamie Johnson - Field of Dreams

Johnson is a current player on Baseball Manitoba's 21U Senior Women's Team Manitoba. She is the Coach of the Children's Hockey Program, and she volunteers at her local arena, and the Annual Terry Fox run in her hometown of Arborg, Manitoba. She has received multiple scholarships, including the Governor-General Award, the Chown Centennial Scholarship, and the Baseball Manitoba 50th Anniversary Female Provincial Player Scholarship in 2018. Johnson attended Nationals multiple times, including throwing a no-hitter in 2018 and winning the Bronze medal with the 21U Senior Women's Team Manitoba in 2019. She is currently attending the University of Manitoba in the Faculty of Science. Her goal is to achieve her undergraduate degree with a major in Psychology and a minor in Statistics. She plans to enrol in the Faculty of Education in the future.

Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of David Barron - Field of Dreams

Barron currently plays for Winnipeg South AAA on the 18U team. He played high school volleyball and hockey and was awarded the Junior Varsity Male Athlete of the Year Award. He has won multiple Provincial Championships with Winnipeg South AAA. He was a member of Team Manitoba at the Ray Carter Cup in 2017 and the Canada Cup in 2018, and he attended the Toronto Blue Jays T12 Skills Showcase in 2019. He has worked with Winnipeg South AAA as a “Rust Busters” Camp Clinician and with Triple Crown Sports as a Spring Baseball Camp Clinician. He is currently registered to attend South Suburban College (SSC) in South Holland, Illinois. He plans to pursue a career in Criminal Justice when he returns to Manitoba.

Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of Ben Baydock - Non Provincial Team Player

Baydock currently plays for the 18U Bonivital Black Sox. He was his high school volleyball team Captain, a AAA Provincial Champion, and a Provincial Silver Medalist in Cross Country. He volunteers for the Bell Tower Community Cafe, as well as multiple sporting teams and events in his community. He has Level 5 piano experience from the Royal Conservatory of Music, and a Bronze Medallion and CPR/First Aid Certification. He has been a player for the Bonivital Red Sox for over two years. He volunteered at the Jr. Jays Baseball Camp in 2019, and currently volunteers for Manitoba Challenger Baseball. Baydock trains at Home Run Sports Training Center and is attending Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario in the fall studying Sports Administration and playing on their baseball team.

Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of Bryden Bukich - Umpire

Bukich has a current University Degree GPA of 4.17 and had a 4.45 GPA at the University of Manitoba in the last two and a half years. He has been on the dean's honour roll the last three years for academic and GPA achievement, awarded UMSU Scholarship the last two years, awarded the NFL Budweiser Recreation Award through Kinesiology for community involvement as an Indigenous student. Bukich is currently helping assistant coach the U14 Male Basketball Team for the North American Indigenous Games, and is helping a business student co-start and design an app for fitness and nutrition. He volunteered for the MS Society for the MS Walk and acted as a trainer at Serratus Movement Centre doing boxing fitness workouts in 2019. He plays basketball recreationally and played at the Canadian Mennonite University from 2016-2018. He participates in numerous running events, resistance train, yoga and boxing fitness. He has umpired baseball the last three years and worked with levels from 11UA up to 18UAA. He was called upon to work the City Playoffs and Championship Final game for 13UAA last year. He has helped younger umpires with their development, using his own experience he learned from senior umpires. Bukich is currently attending the University of Manitoba as an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management with plans to graduate in 2021 and start medical school in 2022. His goal is to become a sports medicine physician or physiatrist, with an interest in integrating Indigenous teachings and practices.

Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of Maddux Mateychuk - Canada Cup Provincial Team Player

Mateychuk has a High School GPA of 87%, is on the Vauxhall School Honour Roll, and is a part of the Anti-Vaping group. He has played many sports, including Varsity Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, Track and Field, Cross Country, Soccer, and Golf. He is a power skating coach, a hockey referee, and he volunteers at Seniors homes within his community. He organized a 4 on 4 fundraising hockey tournament and was drafted into the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. In 2017 he was a Gold Medalist in the Manitoba Games in Baseball, and during the summer of 2018 and 2019, he was on the U17 Canada Cup Provincial Team. He has umpired in the South Central Region and Vauxhall Alberta. He was a minor league U11 baseball coach during the summers of 2017, 2018, and 2019, and was on the South Central AAA team and Altona AA team in the spring of 2020. He was on the Junior National Team Canada from 2018 to 2020 and began attending the Vauxhall Baseball Academy in the Fall of 2018 and 2019. He participated in T12 in Toronto during the Summer of 2020. He played for the U18 AA Altona team, the Altona Junior Bisons, and the South Central AAA U18 team. Mateychuk will be attending Mineral Area College in Missouri to pursue an arts degree and play baseball. He plans to pursue professional baseball as well as exploring firefighting, health-related fields, and sports management.

Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of Paul Esteves - Coach

Esteves is currently a coach for the Bonivital Black Sox 15U team and plays for the St. James A's Senior team. He coached Grade 7 and 8, and high school volleyball, basketball, badminton, track, cross-country, and soccer with Ecole Heritage from 2018-2020. He was awarded the Lost Prizes Scholarship in 2018. He was the head coach for Baseball Manitoba’s 13U Team Manitoba and was a player for the St. Jame’s A’s Senior team in both 2018 and 2019. This fall he is starting a Masters of Human Kinetics and Recreation through an online program at Memorial University. He aspires to teach at a university level within a faculty of Kinesiology or Education. 

Awarded To/Accepted on Behalf Of Jack Moir - Andrew Budge Memorial Scholarship

Moir began playing baseball at the age of five when he joined the Rally Cap Program. He continued to play on community club teams and eventually had the opportunity to play AAA baseball for the 13U Winnipeg South team. He was selected to play for the Winnipeg Gold Team in the Manitoba Summer Games. He is currently a player for the Elmwood Giants and has been with that organization for the last three years. He is the bullpen catcher for the 21U Elmwood Giants team and currently plays for their 18U AAA team along with his father, and sister, Sarah Moir. He is a member of the Home Run Sports Junior Goldeyes Program. He attended Grant Park High School, volunteering to help with younger students and multiple sporting events as a part of their Leadership Program. He graduated this past summer. He volunteered at the Grand Slam Baseball Camp for Red River in 2019, and this year he helped coach the Red River Valley Winter Baseball Camp out of Gateway Community Club. Moir has been helping with field maintenance at Koskie Field since 2018. He received the Mark and Diane Boback Scholarship from Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and plans to continue his education there this fall in their Business Admin Program. He will also be playing baseball for the Itasca Vikings under the guidance of Coach Lampa when College Baseball resumes. He plans to pursue a career in the automotive industry once he graduates.
